Right that's it. Casting has closed for LineUpThree. If you missed it and you're spitting chips then don't be too hard on yourselves. LineUpFour will be casting in September so there is always a chance to get involved then.
In the meantime come to LineUpThree on Monday 3rd June, its going to be a top notch night to kick off our summer season of fun.
See you then.
This is a short piece of footage from 1927 that is currently being shown at the BFI. I was put on to this by one of our LineUpThree directors, Jake Murray. Its fascinating to see how this wonderful city has changed in just under a century.
I also love the innocence of the content and cinematography. If you've got 10 minutes then give it a watch...
So we now have our directors on board and by the end of the week we will have all of our actors as well. It was great to meet everyone yesterday and I once again feel humbled to have such creative talent at our fingertips.
This is who is involved with each show;
Clench by Sean Cook, directed by Jake Murray
Guards by Anthony Teague, directed by Jenni Bakst
Shingletown by Robbie Best, directed by Henry Regan
Suffering in Sirens by Adam Brummitt, directed by Sean Turner
The Cannibals by Joseph Charlton, directed by Mike Beigel
Its going to be awesome!
We are now accepting applications from both males and females for the role of 'Narrator' in Shingletown. The Narrator is now dead and watches over Shingletown. They must be skinny and worn as if destroyed by addiction.
Also please don't let age be too much of a restriction - if you think you can play a part then put yourself forward.
Thank you
Hello Everyone
We've done it again!
We have whittled down 50 new script submissions to choose our final 5 for LineUpThree. Thank you to everyone that took the time to send us their work. It really is touching every time we put out a call for submissions and watch them flood in.
The final 5 pieces are:
Clench by Sean Cook
Guards by Anthony Teague
Shingletown by Robbie Best
Suffering In Sirens by Adam Brummitt
The Cannibals by Joseph Charlton
Now the ramp up to LineUpThree begins. We will be announcing casting breakdowns very shortly.
Tickets are now on sale. So spread the word or get involved!
So submissions are once again closed.
If you did get a script in to us then the best of luck to you!
However if you did miss out then not to worry. We will be back in the Autumn after a summer soiree in Edinburgh at the fringe.
In the meantime, distract yourself from worry or cheer yourself up with this brilliant blog post on buzzfeed about smiling....
Things That Will Test If Your Smile Still Works
Also come down and see us on the 3rd June, you can get tickets by clicking here.
We are still buzzing from the brilliance of last night, it is even helping to alleviate our hangovers!
We just wanted to let you know that submissions for writers are now open, all the details are on our LineUpThree page so check it out!
We are lucky enough to have some very talented friends, they're extremely generous too which helps. This meant that Nordic Giants let us use their hauntingly beautiful music as part of LineUpTwo. Here is some of their work...
This week we are jumping on the campaign bandwagon to support the 'My Theatre Matters' campaign. It is a group campaign supported by Equity, The Stage and the TMA, the Theatrical Management Association.
This campaign is about mobalising audiences to support their local theatres. In this time of austerity we are seeing a worrying pattern of local governments cutting funding to theatres that are seen as a luxury not a neccessity. If we keep heading down this path then we could see local theatres disappearing from our towns and all the community work they do with it.
Local theatre is essential to us as an emerging theatre company. Fortunately for us Greenwich Theatre still receives a government grant allowing them to continue with the numerous outreach projects that they oversea in the local community.
To see more about the campaign and to sign up in support click on the banner below.
Oh and please support local theatre but coming to see LineUpTwo on the 8th April (next Monday) at 8PM.
Our brilliant friend Sam Thomas has a debut album out. He was generous enough to let us use some of the music for our first LineUp and we haven't stopped listening since. It is resonating and unique. You can here the debut single here...
So we had a chuffing busy weekend auditioning a load of lovely actors for our 24 strong cast. It was a mentally and physically (darn snow) challenging weekend.
I want to take a moment to thank all of you that did come down (some of you multiple times) to see us. It was overwhelming to see such a wealth and variety of talent, we had over 450 applications so well done for making it through.
I am happy to announce our final cast here:

This just goes to show that you should always give people a chance to prove you wrong...
Applications for LineUpTwo are now CLOSED.
Sorry if you missed the deadline this time. We can only assume that you were trapped in some kind of 127 Hours type scenario or maybe you are in Central London but unfortunately use O2 which seems incapable of maintaining any kind of mobile or 3G service. Anyway I digress.
Please keep checking back on the website. We frequently have new projects for actors and all sorts to get involved in. We will be casting for LineUpThree around May so definitely keep that in mind.
If you did apply then hang on in there, we will be in touch early next week if you are shortlisted.
Thank you!
Hello!
This is just a quick post to announce the directors for LineUpTwo. They are as follows;
Clench - Sophie Reynolds
Faces - Andrew Maddock
So I Go Back - Jonnie Riordan
Small Talk - Elliot Brown
Unplugged - Anne Stoffels
All these guys are brilliant up and coming directors so we are chuffed to be working with them on this LineUp.
If you do want to come along and support them then you can BUY TICKETS from the Greenwich Theatre now.
So we have finally selected the 5 plays that will make up LineUpTwo! Thank you to everyone that has submitted pieces for our consideration, we had a mammoth 90 scripts sent to us; which certainly put us under pressure to choose our favourites. At times we wanted to break free but eventually we put our heads together and made a breakthru.
Our final pieces are:
Clench by Sean Cook
Faces by Flossie Joseph
Small Talk by Lucyna Raczka
So I Go Back by Lucy Elizabeth Foster
Unplugged by Perdita Stott
So now we have our pieces we move onto the casting stage which is always a kind of magic time. Any budding actors that would like to get involved please have a look at our casting page where you can see all the details of the character breakdowns and how to apply. The closing date is next Friday 15th at 7pm so get your applications in because this will come round in a flash, if you have already applied then hang on in there you should hear by next week.
We will also be announcing our directors shortly.
Whilst you are here you might want to look at our 'What we are loving this week' post. This is going to be a weekly post that showcases stuff that we find incredible, interesting or inspiring, so keep a look out.
Also don't stop me now but did you notice how many Queen references i managed to shoehorn in to this post?
We are lucky enough to live in this highly technological age. An age where any stranger can make a piece of art and reach out across the globe and touch your heart.
I was lucky enough to watch this video today....
So today has been a day of decisions. Least of all trying to decide what to name this blog post...
....if I go with 'branch' am I saying we are a tree?...is that a good metaphor for the company?...maybe I should go with wing? Birds are good, birds soar...they also poo on people...maybe sector! but then we sound like a Battlestar...look I've promised you you can watch another episode of Galactica after you finish this blog post, STOP GOING ON ABOUT IT....
...you can see my trouble.
More importantly however, we had our first meeting to discuss the education arm of Vertical Line Theatre. We have always planned to have an education side to our company, a passion project of ours as none of us were particularly blessed with academic achievement in school. We hope to inspire young people to think creatively to achieve their goals. It is early days but watch this space for further announcements about our education strand/limb/bit.
We have also decided to number each LineUp event as we feel that we progress and learn with each successful night. So to that end i have adapted the logo....
Submissions are now open for scripts for our LineUp Event on Monday 8th April. The deadline is Friday 22nd February so get your scripts to us ASAP!
Our Vision
Vertical Line Theatre was formed in 2010 with the aim of producing high quality pieces of new writing from emerging artists.
Our aim is to challenge audiences by drawing upon the lives and visions of young adults through writing about topics concerning the current world we live in. We want to make truthful performances that continue to provoke and stimulate audiences even after the final bow.
We work with emerging artists with the aim of steadily building a company of loyal theatre makers that share our vision and ambition. These artists come from a pool of young writers, actors and directors uniting to establish and develop a creative network of emerging talent to share opportunities, build careers and make work that challenges both makers and audiences.
Vertical Line Theatre are supported artists of Greenwich Theatre and have previously received support from Nick Hytner, The Royal Court, Pleasance Theatre and Theatre 503. We were also shortlisted for the NSDF Edinburgh Emerging Artist Award 2010.
Some praise for Vertical Line Theatre:
'Their energy and enthusiasm is amazing and very infectious, not to mention the sheer
talent and resourcefulness they have poured into Vertical Line. This is all
underpinned by exceptional professionalism, organisation, and communication.
It’s an unbeatable combination.'
Jonathan Skinner, Writer, The Assistant, LineUpOne

Suffering In Sirens
Written by Adam Brummitt
Directed by Sean Turner
Set against accounts of the
experiences endured by Yosef, an Israeli member of The IDF beginning his
compulsory military tenure at eighteen, and Arsalan, a Palestinian detainee,
during the Israeli Hezbollah War of 2006, the play examines the events specific
to these two characters in the month long exchange of bombardment and the
ramifications felt several years subsequent, impacting both younger and older
generations of their families and spanning continents in its consequences.
Here is some praise for the first LineUp Event that took place on Monday 4th February:
'…the entire evening buzzed with electricity.' **** Sarah Milton, The Upcoming
'I don’t remember ever seeing a scratch night without a dud...a great opportunity for casting directors and emerging producers to see 22 actors who have been auditioned and gathered for their skill with new work' Chris Grady, What's On Stage
‘…LineUp goes down a treat.’ Everything Theatre

Faces
Synopsis - How much thought do you put into the strangers who surround you? Isn’t it hard to imagine that all the people we don’t interact with actually have their own lives? In this fast paced contemporary comedy, set on a train heading to London, we overhear the conversations of fourteen passengers; friends, family and strangers as they tease, harass and meet each other. As a society, we tend to be too self-involved, but if you look beyond, you will realise there is drama in the lives of everyone sitting around you. And sometimes looks can be deceiving.
Small Talk
Synopsis - A dark and humorous exploration of the detachment felt by many people of my generation, whether detachment from the world around them, or from their own actions and emotions. 8 young people exist unconnected through narrative, but linked thematically. Each tells their story and in doing so, tries to position themselves, rather self-indulgently, in the world around them and usually fails. This premise is paradoxical as these characters, often perceiving themselves as misunderstood and alone stand in front of an audience revealing all; this paradox is for the director to play around with.
So I Go Back
Written by Lucy Elizabeth Foster
Synopsis - Death has been treading on the toes of Katy for as long as she can remember, and suddenly she seems to be catching up. But for Death, Katy is different from any of the other tortured souls she’s used to taking. Katy is alive in a way she’d never known a human to be before, in a way she could never be herself, in a way that she can’t quite let go of... So I Go Back tells the story of how one woman tries to live her dream life, as one woman tries desperately to take it away.
Unplugged
Synopsis - Every family has its ghosts. In a hospital room a decision must be made whether or not to take an elderly relative off life support. The family do not get along, a rumour starts, a secret wants to be told and nobody can agree on anything. Unknown and unseen, the spirit of their unconscious relative wanders amongst them, watching everything, trying to influence his loved ones and coming to terms with his own mortality. Tensions run high as the past refuses to die.
There will also be live music from Alex RV Phillips.
With additional music from Nordic Giants.
Head Technician - Ed Locke

The first LineUp event was on Monday 4th February at 8pm and featured a selection of ten minute extracts from seven pieces of new writing from emerging playwrights.
All seven plays are listed below, click the names for more information on everyone involved.
You can also read the reviews here:
Synopsis: The Assistant follows the bizarre relationship that develops when Stuart, a schizophrenic recluse, projects a personality onto Anna, the “assistant” who pops up on the screen of his new home computer. With dark ironic humour, the play addresses the themes of identity, isolation, and freedom.
Then They Came For MeSynopsis: A two hander about Harriet, a mental health worker, who is pushed to breaking point by her job and, in particular, one of her clients, Adam.
In Out (A Feeling)Synopsis: In Out (A Feeling) is a journey into the lives of a Girl and a Boy. Both unable to control their future. Both speaking upon a past that they'll never be able to relive. Connected for a moment but yet so far apart. For now.
Synopsis: From a once close family, sisters Sarah, Jen and Liz have had very little to do with each other in adulthood. This all changes when the word cancer enters their lives and loss becomes an impending reality not just a dreaded concept. Reunited by the devastating news that their mother has a brain tumour, together they must endure the cruellest version of the waiting game. Suddenly these strong, intelligent women are left helpless, suffocated by fear in a world controlled by doctors. Before they can find the strength to help their mother, these sisters must learn to be sisters again, they must learn to love each other and themselves once more.
Synopsis: Superhero Snail Boy follows the journey of two children coming to terms with the loss of a loved one. Through imagination and blossoming friendship they find ways to tame a terrible sadness. A new play for young people with a theme that is pertinent to all.
Synopsis: An actress, a writer and a mobster meet with life and death consequences. It’s a comedy!
